first edition, first issue of the third novel by an African-American woman. Preceded by Harriet Wilson's "Our Nig," and the newly discovered "Bondwoman's Narrative." For many years Emma Dunham Kelley's "Megda" was thought to have preceded "Iola Leroy," but recent scholarship has proven that Kelley was white. Margolies and Bakish, p. 254.
